My Journey to Winning a Silver Medal at Skills Ontario

My First Program
One of the pivotal moments in my programming journey was when I wrote my very first program. This experience not only laid the foundation for my skills but also sparked my passion for automation and control systems.
I started by working on an I/O box, where I programmed a sequence using an Allen-Bradley Micro 830 PLC. Utilizing the Connected Components Workbench (CCW) software, I was able to bring my ideas to life, controlling the inputs and outputs with precision.
This initial success gave me the confidence to explore more complex programming challenges and set the stage for my future achievements, including competing in the Skills Ontario competition. It was a moment of realization that I had found my path in the world of automation and robotics.
When I began my college journey in the field of Automation and Robotics, I was eager to dive into all the opportunities that came my way. One day, my professor introduced me to the Ontario Mechatronics competition. He recognized my potential in programming and encouraged me to take on the role of the programmer in a two-person mechatronics team. The idea of competing in such a prestigious event was both exciting and challenging, so I immediately accepted the offer.
The Beginning
As I continued to develop my skills, my professor introduced me to more advanced systems, specifically Handling and Separating Stations. I transitioned to programming these stations using Studio 5000, which allowed me to deepen my understanding of industrial automation and expand my technical capabilities
The Preparation for Skills Ontario
With a solid foundation in programming, I began rigorous preparation for the Ontario Mechatronics competition. I focused on mastering the CompactLogix PLC using Studio 5000, spending countless hours solving programming challenges. I also broadened my knowledge by learning different programming languages, such as Sequential Function Chart (SFC), Function Block Diagram (FBD), and Structured Text (ST). Each of these languages provided unique approaches to problem-solving, equipping me to handle the complexities of the competition.
The Competition Experience
Participating in the Skills Ontario competition was a challenging yet rewarding experience. Working closely with my teammate Jay, we tackled real-world scenarios that demanded precise programming and quick decision-making. The competition tested our skills, teamwork, and perseverance, providing invaluable experience in a high-pressure environment.

The Achievement
Our hard work and dedication paid off when we won the silver medal at Skills Ontario. This achievement was a moment of immense pride and satisfaction, affirming that all the effort we put into preparation had been worthwhile. Winning the silver medal not only validated my skills but also motivated me to continue pushing the boundaries in the field of automation and robotics.

Looking Ahead
Winning the silver medal at Skills Ontario was just the beginning of my journey. This accomplishment solidified my passion for automation and robotics and fueled my desire to keep learning and growing in this ever-evolving field. I am excited about the future and look forward to the new challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
